WEEK 1
3 SEP 2018
On the first week of class, Dr. Hayati briefed us on the module outline for this semester. After explaining the module outlines follow by the project that we required to completed. Afterwards She ask us to choose a topic of research that we wanted to work on, and gather as a group based on the topics that we chose and discuss among ourselves. Initially my 1st choices is to go towards movie and film and the sub-topic that i'm interested in does visual effects (VFX) in movie helps with the story telling? and does visual effect will take over a practical effect in the future?
Since i'm a big fan of movie that have a good visual effect and a good storytelling, i decided to refer on my two favorite big director currently that produce a quite astonishing movie. 1st one is Christoper Nolan
and the second is Edgar Wright.
From the group discussion, i knew that my subject of research maybe i can relate to two favorite director on how they both having the same and consistent style which is making a good visual at the same time retain the good storytelling.
7 SEP 2018
For today class, Dr.Hayati ask each of us to present a brief idea on what are we currently try to research on. So each of us can share our idea at the same time our Lecturer will give her own input while telling us to see if we can related to our topic. While my turn, i decided to present on the topic that is not related to the 1st class, which is on the topic of Games Design and the sub-topic is single-player narrative is dying or is storytelling in games are dying? I told her my excuse and reason to change is since i am a fan since i was young playing games with a good storytelling and i realized that all the research that we do for this subject will bring over to the next semester and eventually into our final. I told her that i don't want to wasted any time and research that i will not used eventually in the end. Since the direction for my upcoming final is gonna me games related, i will change to game instead of movie and film.
I presented her my idea of doing a research on games and related to storytelling in games. She agree with my topic and she told me to proceed with the research. She told all of us to start our journal reading as early as we can since this the minimum journal studies is at least 10. Here are some of the question that i bring up for my current issue related to single player is dying. Question bellow :
This does raise a critical question on future games :
- Is single-player game mode will be dying in the future?
- Does the storytelling aspect in games will be forgotten?
- And does this will change the idea of games or game play in general in the future where people will only sees a games as a battle royale mode where people all come together in a match and survive for the future generation?
- Is games developer only care about the profit that they can make out of this genre and ignoring the value of storytelling in games?
- Is future player of games only care about the online match that connected to the rest of the world together with mindless gaming game play and no storytelling aspect?
- Is single-player with rich storytelling is harder and time consuming to produce?
- Does the majority of people enjoys the mindless game rather than a rich storytelling game play?
- Does the in-game currency system makes current people wanna play battle royale genre even more?
Before the class end, she told all of us to create a google drive folder that we can share our files, document and writing since all of our submission is online base.
WEEK 2
14 SEP 2018
This week of class, Dr. Hayati clarified once again on what we need to do and gave us a lecture on how to write a problem statement as well as a lecture on research process. Dr. Hayati also asked us to start reading a lot of articles and literature that supports our topic of research. Before class ended, a few other classmates who hasn't presented to Dr. Hayati last week presented in front where Dr. Hayati directly provide feedback.
WEEK 3
21 SEP 2018
On the third week of class, there was no lecture. Instead, we had a session with the librarian to learn about information literacy. We were taught on how to search for articles, ebooks, journals, etc. on Taylor's library portal. We were also taught on referencing and how to do citation. Referencing is a must to follow Harvard style citation.
WEEK 4
24 SEP 2018
After consultation with DR. Hayati, he told me to revisit my idea again for the 1st topic. He told me that my research problem will not lead me anywhere due to the problem is mainly trending. She told me that is not suitable due to the fact trending will change every time. She told me to re-think my topic. It’s better to be in the same topic due to the research that i already have.
I decided to change other topic but still in the same category. And i decided to choose on The unique of Low Poly Modeling in Games. Since i already started the research for low-polygon model for my Personal Project 1 the other subject for this semester and my direction for going towards final year is do create my own personal game, i decided to go with this topic. Bellow are some sample low-poly style that i already produce so far by using a software called Cinema 4D :
After showing to Dr.Hayati she told me that it’s acceptable with the a solid problem statement. She told me to proceed.
Bellow are the new topic that i chosen briefly :
The unique of Low Poly Modeling in Games.
Introduction.
Life-like graphics for PC and Console games were considered evolutionary and demanded high-polygon count before the iPhone entered the market. Each new game release features even more realistic graphics and incredible detail and getting close to reality was the central evolutionary trend in games as game creators stuffed more polygons to achieve life-like reality. This required huge processing power that PC and Console hardware gave it to them. Ironically, the whole evolution turned irrelevant for mobile games. Life-like character with high-polygon count did not turn out desirable for the mobile hardware at all. It needed something that is light but equally engaging thus the resurgence of low-poly art and flat design.
The idea behind how does the low poly modeling works is that 3D object is render in real-time every second during gameplay. Every 3D models are composed of numerous polygons. More polygons equal to more vertices and vice-versa. This is where the low poly style came alive as the game developer need to keep the vertex count as low as possible without affecting the visual quality. It may sound like a step-back method at 1st but the challenge of creating a good visual and making the game interesting at the same time is where low poly shine. Initially is meant for mobile games as smartphone technology rise but as for now this low poly style is slowly adapting into big games developer and consumer market starting to accept it as a new genre in visual style and no longer consider it as a step back method.
Research Objective.
To make a solid finding and understanding on technique of low poly style modeling and the impact of low poly style modeling to support a game development that can produce by a small or specifically single workforce in the future.
Research Question.
What makes Low Poly style modeling in games become so unique that is acceptable in this current state of technology and become a genre on it own self?
WEEK 6
01 OCT 2018
For our 1st submission, Research Proposal. We were required to find a research topic with a suitable topic to research on and will sustain our final project. After a few consultation with Dr.Hayati, i made my 1st final submission. Bellow are the introduction from the 1st submission :
Abstract.
In today’s gaming industry, each new game release will produce a constantly increasing of quality in graphic visual and it’s features even more realistic graphics and incredible detail that is getting close to realism with the help of advancement technology. This was considered central evolutionary trend in games in years to come. But due to the rise of mobile game platform, gaming industry start to undergo a change and adapting to the limitation of the mobile platform technology. The idea behind this is every game have a 3D object and every 3D models are composed of numerous polygons. More polygons equal to more vertices and vice-versa. The more details the 3D object, the more polygons counts that is required to render in real time. With the rise of mobile game platform, game industry need to produce a game that is interesting and at the same time have a good visual with the limitation processing power that is sufficient with the mobile platform. This is where the low polygon style was born. Initially is was created due to the limitation of processing in mobile platform but it start to become a new trend of style for gaming industry where is called “low-poly” style.
For more details explanation, i refer to this video from a Game conferences :
And for today feedback :
- For today class, Dr.Hayati ask to created a different document for the revised after consultation.
- For the research, she told to change the “impact” studies due to this will lead to social sciences studies. Dr.Hayati suggested that maybe i can change the impact to “developing” as this research will lead me to my final year project, creating a game.
- Find more Journal due to the limitation of time for this semester. Journal from the researcher
- And finally we can start the primary research. Example sending out email, reaching out to the industry people. Send 10 at least so that we can at least got 2 respond
- Study the impact of low polygon art style in games.
WEEK 7-8
For this week need to present the findings that we manage to collected so far to the critical review. I do manage to finish almost 6 review. Bellow are the presentation.
Conclusion for this presentation.
- Low Polygon style is considered a hybrid style between Abstract and Stylized.
- “Low Poly” is a new trend for Games Aesthetic as the style slowly applying not only for mobile games.
- Wide variety of styles, rules, and aesthetics are what keeps games interesting.
- People able to recognize a shape without too much details on the form.
- Abstract Style is consider the Untapped style according to Mark J. P. Wolf due to the technology capability in the future.
WEEK 9
After we're done with the critical review, we need to start collecting our Primary Data. I choose Email Interview and Survey. For email interview, i have a selected expert that is specialized in the main research object. They all coming from CEO to Designer. All together is 7 Experts. Mean while for the Survey, i decided to contact a few close group Facebook that majority of people are enthusiast in this particularity aesthetic style. Both method collection is Quantitative and Qualitative. Bellow Are the Draft idea presentation :
As for the Email Interview(Quantitative) & Survey(Qualitative) are refer bellow:
Email Interview(Quantitative).
Survey(Qualitative).
Progression Continue.
WEEK 10-14
Starting from this week, we need to follow up our Primary Data collection. We need to monitor at the survey and slowly start collecting the data while the Email Interview, we need to send a follow up email to remind them that if the expert received the email, and possible to participate the Email Interview. For the Expert, towards the end i manage to find 7 expert but only 3 manage to reply back to me and participate the email interview. Bellow on the slide will further explain the journey.
For week 14, we required to present our final data collection to the class and the participant is our classmate. Bellow are the presentation Slide :
CONCLUSION.
This is an interesting subject as overall, i do believe throughout this subject i found myself become more critical towards certain subject. I do believe this subject also makes me read and understand certain subject into depth. Every one had their own opinions on particular subject or opinions. This subject also teach me to be good in organizing time as this research do take some times to finish and the process of doing it as overall is very strict. Strict in the part of research, collecting data, reviewing it and understand it and translate in my own words. All in all, this subject makes my Final Year Project for final semester becomes more clear as i understand my direction.
THANK YOU!
